Ski Mountaineering Suggestions - Tour 1:


Penkkopf (2,011 m)

Valley resort:Grossarl (920 m)
Starting-point:District of Au, turn-off Auschule / Hotel Fichtenhof (900 m). When little snow turn-off access road Breitenebenalm at 1,200 m
Height difference:From the Grossarl main road: 1,100 m - from the  Breitenebenalm turn-off: 800 m.
Level of difficulty / requirements: Beautiful countryside, medium-difficulty ski mountaineering tour.
Total duration:Ascent approx. 3 hours - descent approx. 1 hour
Best time of year: November - April
Map:Tappeiner-hiking map no. 311"Grossarl Valley" Scale: 1:35.000
Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features: This tour is the first accesible tour coming from St. Johann/Pg. as well as the tour to the Gabel and is particularly suitable as an introductory tour. Can also be undertaken in bad weather. 
Ascent:From the Grossarl main road along past slopes and mountain farm meadows to the Breitenebenalm access road. Via the Breitenebenalm towards the Grosswildalm. Before the Grosswildalm turn left and climb up through sparse larch forest to the Pennkopf.

PS: This tour - as the tour to the Gabel - can also be undertaken from the Breitenebenalm turn-off (barrier). The ascent is then an hour shorter. Both tours can be combined.
Descent:Along the ascent route there are many varied descents.

Gabel (2,037 m)
Valley resort:Grossarl (920 m)
Starting-point:A) district of Au, turn-off Auschule / Hotel Fichtenhof (900 m).
B) when little snow turn-off access road Breitenebenalm at 1,200 m
Height difference:From the Grossarl main road: 1,100 m - from the  Breitenebenalm turn-off: 800 m.
Level of difficulty / requirements: Beautiful countryside, medium-difficulty ski mountaineering tour.
Total duration:Ascent approx. 3 hours - descent approx. 1 hour
Best time of year: November - April

Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features: This tour is the first accesible tour coming from St. Johann/Pg. and is particularly suitable as an introductory tour at the beginning of the winter. Can also be undertaken in bad weather, although the short peak climb should be avoided.
Ascent:From the Grossarl main road along past slopes and mountain farm meadows to the Breitenebenalm access road. Via the Breitenebenalm towards the Karseeggalm. From the Karseggalm climb up along the forest edge after leaving the forest to the right. Cross through a tuft of forest and over easy terrain to the mountain ridge. The last part to the peak is very steep, therefore it is better to go up to the peak cross without skis.

PS: This tour - as the tour to the Gabel - can also be undertaken from the Breitenebenalm turn-off (barrier). The ascent is then an hour shorter. Both tours can be combined.

Loosbühel (1,984 m)

Starting-point:Ellmau Valley - Klausbauer or Grund, 1,350 m
Height difference:700 m
Level of difficulty / requirements:Beautiful countryside, easy tour
Total duration:Ascent approx. 2 hours - descent approx. 3/4 of an hour 
Best time of year: November - April
Map:Tappeiner-hiking map no. 311 "Grossarl Valley" Scale: 1:35.000
Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features: This tour is suitable for beginners as well as experienced ski mountaineerers from the start of the winter. Even in bad weather this tour can be undertaken.
Ascent:From Grund climb up the access road towards the Loosbühelalm. Before you reach the mountain hut, turn off right through a short part of larch forest and finally over a short part (large mountain pine) tothe peak plateau.

PS: This tour can be combined with the Filzmooshörndl.
Descent:Along the ascent route there are many varied descents.

Starting-point:Ellmau Valley - Klausbauer or Grund, 1,350 m
Height difference:840 m
Level of difficulty / requirements: Beautiful countryside, easy tour
Total duration:Ascent approx. 2 1/2 hours - descent approx. 1 hour
Best time of year: November - April

Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features:This tour is suitable for beginners as well as experienced ski mountaineerers from the start of the winter. Even in bad weather this tour can be undertaken. In combination with the Loosbühel this tour makes a very pleasant day tour. 
Ascent:From Grund climb up the path to the Filzmoosalm. Past the mountain hut through sparse larch and mountain pine forest to a small plateau. In a straight line carry on to the mountain ridge to the left of the peak. Via a moderate sloping peak ridge you finally come to the peak cross of the  Filzmooshörndl.

PS: This tour can be combined with the Loosbühel. At the Filzmoosalm put the skis back on and climb up the south-westerly slopes to the Loosbühel (2,048 m). Ascent of nearly an hour, fabulous descent from the Loosbühel, otherwise you have to take the path from the Filzmoosalm as downhill route.

Frauenkogel (2,424 m)

Starting-point:A) Hüttschlag - Schappach - through forest to Hinterfeld farm
B) Hinterfeld farm (by car along the access road, turn off before the Hüttschlag tunnel).
Height difference:Hinterfeld (approx. 1,250 m) 1,200 m
Level of difficulty / requirements: Route A) direct to the peak, to the right steep, dangerous, ascent fairly monotonous.
Route B) more interesting scenery - route not as strenuous.
Total duration:Ascent approx. 3 - 3 1/2 hours - descent approx. 1 hour
Best time of year: Spring

Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features:From the Hinterfeld farm along the forest path, turn right at the first fork, after 100 m up through forest to the start of the mountain pasture area of the Ebenalm (3 huts). Here you choose route A) or B).
Ascent:Route A): From the Ebenalmens directly up to the peak via the "Frauenfelder", hardly any vegetation, steep to the right and dangerous!
Route B): At the right-hand hut towards the "Schulter" - above the alm in the forest there a small clearings - climb up gently over this rounded mountain ridge - the peak awaits to the left, then the track pulls into a corrie. Here you cross over towards the Frauenkogel. This peak is one of the most beautiful view points in the Grossarl Valley.
Descent:From the peak via the open eastern flank and the huts of the Ebenalm, then keeping right onto an alpine path into the´Tofern Valley to a forest road. Along this to the Hinterfeld farm.

Valley resort:Hüttschlag (1,030 m)
Starting-point:Resort of Hüttschlag - Schappach - throught the forest to the Hinterfeld farm. You can reach the Hinterfeld farm by car (along the access road before the Hüttschlag tunnel, turn off right).
Height difference:approx. 1,240 m
Level of difficulty / requirements:  Wonderful ski mountaineering peak - can be climbed on various routes - some steep slopes dangerous in bad weather conditions. Therefore the most popular route is described.
Total duration:approx. 3 1/2 - 4 hours - descent 1 hour
Best time of year: Spring
Map:Tapeiner-hiking map no. 311 "Grossarl Valley" Scale: 1:35.000
Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features: Fascinating mountain backdrop - border area between the Hohe Tauern and the Niedere Tauern.
Ascent:From the "Hinterfeld" farm along the forest road - past the chapel - into the Tofern Valley to the two Tofernalms. From the uppper Tofernalm (1,800 m) pass behind the hut towards the Tofernkar (wayside shrine) - here keep to the mountain side dip amd turn up here tothe right, looking out of the valley (here mainly old ascent tracks) carry on behind a small, imposing mountain ridge towards the peak - quite steep - powerful cornices below the peak plateau. Past these to the peak with the Bad-Gasteiner-Hütte.
Descent:From the peak via the open eastern flank and the huts of the Ebenalm, then keeping right onto an alpine path into the´Tofern Valley to a forest road. Along this to the Hinterfeld farm.

Starting-point:Hamlet of Karteis, Seilsitzberg access road, Halmoosalm (1,300 m)
Height difference:From the Halmoosalm, 900 m
Level of difficulty / requirements:  Beautiful countryside, easy tour. 
Total duration:Ascent approx. 2 1/2 hours - descent approx. 1 hour
Best time of year: November - April
Map:Tappeiner-hiking map no. 311 "Grossarl Valley" Scale: 1:35.000
Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features: This tour is easily accesible coming from St. Johann via Hüttschlag, hamlet of Karteis and the access road via the Seilstizberg, as the road to the Halmoosalm is nearly always cleared. As the tour is not difficult, it is particularly suitable for beginners. Can also be undertaken in bad weather.
Ascent:From the Halmossalm along a gently sloping meadow to the access road, which you leave to the left after about 200 m. From there the marked path leads on to the Karteisalm - carry on through a sparse larch forest onto a small plateau. From here you can see the peak cross. The peak ascent is negotiated along long windy bends, Alternatively you can detour to the right onto the peak ridge after the plateau, however, beware of avalanche danger.
Descent:Along the ascent route to Karteis and Halmoosalm or from the peak keeping left over the ridge to the Ragglalm. From here along the access road back to the starting-point, the Halmoosalm.

Starting-point:Aschaustüberl (4 km behind Hüttschlag towards valley head) - Steinmannbauer - also possible to drive up along the Oberneureit access road.
Height difference:1,050 m
Level of difficulty / requirements:  Lovely ski mountaineering tour, from the peak glorious views of the Hohe Tauern.
Total duration:Ascent approx. 2 1/2 - 3 hours - descent 1 hour
Best time of year: November - April
Map:Tappeiner-hiking map no. 311 "Grossarl Valley" Scale: 1:35.000
Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features: This tour is easily accesible coming from St. Johann/Pg. Car park at the Aschaustüberl or at the end of the access road in Oberneureit-Löwenbergeralm.
Ascent:Steinmannbauer - ascent directly behind the farm over the tractor route to the fenced-in meadow - climb up to upper left corner (gap in fence) - from there straight up to the road - towards Hirschgrubenalm - on the first sharp right bend turn left into the forest after 100 m - carry on along a forest path - from there climb up over free terrain to the alpine path between the Hirschgrubenalm and the Aschlreitalm, after approx. 300 m turn off to the right, climbing throught the somewhat steep sparse forest. At the edge of the forest the terrain flatterns - then make tracks over the north-eastern corried to the peak.

Starting-point:Stockham car park (7 km into the valley fromHüttschlag)
Starting-point:1,220 m
Level of difficulty / requirements: Particularly unsuitable for beginners in bad snow conditions! The track is often icy around the "Geissmahdloches"!
Total duration:Ascent approx. 3 1/2 - 4 hours - descent approx. 1 1/4 hours
Best time of year: November - April
Map:Tappeiner-hiking map no. 311 "Grossarl Valley" Scale: 1:35.000
Equipment:Ski equipment, transceiver, avalanche shovel and probe.
Characteristics / features:

Fabulous ski mountaineering tour, which due to the so-called "Geißmahdloch" requires strength and good physical condition! Also applies to the descent!

Ascent:Stockham car park – towards the Pertillbauer farm – at the chapel turn right along the meadow– along the lumber road to the so-called "Geissmahdloch" - a very steep, difficult gully – keeping to the left, crossing the dip and carrying on upwards to the Modereggalm – past the old, derelict Modereggalm gently climbing up to the peak. The upper part only advisable in safe snow conditions. The snow is often blown off the peak slope, therefore less risk involved.

Total duration:Ascent approx. 4 - 4 1/2 hours - descent approx. 1 1/2 hours
Best time of year: November - April

Characteristics / features:

Fabulous ski mountaineering tour, which due to the so-called "Geißmahdloch" requires strength and good physical condition! Also applies to the descent!

Ascent:

Stockham car park – towards the Pertillbauer farm – at the chapel turn right along the meadow– along the lumber road to the so-called "Geissmahdloch" - a very steep, difficult gully – keeping to the left, crossing the dip and carrying on upwards to the Modereggalm. From there over alpine pasture to the highest situated mountain pines (directly under the Plattenkogel) – then keeping to the left over the gently climbing high plateau. Cross over the dell, to the left slope ridge, which leads directly to the peak (peak ascent relatively steep).
