Harbachalm

1,612 m (1 1/2 hours)

Harbachalm

The area aroung the Tofernalm and Reitalm counts among the former copper mining fields in the Grossarl Valley. The Harbachalm is the only remaining mountain miners' hut from the 17th century still open to the public. Nowadays it is a highly popular hiking destination whatever the weather. To get there you take the Hinterfeld access road (Hüttschlag, just before the tunnel on the right) and then carry on along a forest path, which is also well-used by cyclists.

Hiking destinations: Tofernalm (see page 22), Tofernscharte, Gamskarkogel, Frauenkogel, valley crossing to Bad Gastein, etc.

The Harbachalm and Tofernalm area is particularly renowned for its rich abundance of yellow and spotted gentian (also called "gentian root" in local dialect), the root of which has a special healing effect on stomach disorders and is a protected species. A legend in the book "Gletschergoass und Kupfer.." (Glacier Goat and Copper) tells of the root from the Tofern.
